the CHALLENGE

Create a video that best captures your take on the moral of Ballad of the Rag Man.
You can approach this from a personal angle, or make it into a general statement about the way that our society treats so-called “outcasts.” Get creative! Find out just how much you can communicate in a video – just make sure that you show your copy of Ballad of the Rag Man in your video somewhere – it’s your official entry ticket!

Your Entry

Here are the categories into which you can enter your video:
Children (17 or younger),
Classrooms, and
Adults (18 or older)

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR DIFFERENT THINGS YOU COULD DO WITH YOUR VIDEO! – we will accept entries from Rag Man Project participants of all ages, and also from school classrooms around the country!

DOCUMENTARY:
YOU COULD . . . talk about someone in your community who gets overlooked, under-loved, taken advantage of. Maybe it’s a family member or a friend. Maybe it’s a neighbor. Maybe it’s even a rescued animal who looks all shaggy, but has a long life story.
• Interview those people.
• Ask them questions about their lives.
• Talk to the camera after your interview about how important those people are in your life, and in the lives of others.
• Most importantly, SURPRISE US! Be creative!

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:
YOU COULD . . . talk about people going out to help the needy in your community.
• Take footage of what they do.
• Talk about how they are changing the world.
• Most importantly, SURPRISE US! Be creative!

PERSONAL REACTIONS/STORIES:
YOU COULD . . . tell your own story relating to the Rag Man Project.

SONGS:
Both individuals and schools also have the option of writing an original song, recording it, and submitting the video of their song to Rag Man Project as part of the video contest. Any songs submitted must be the work of the submitter, and must adhere to the same guidelines as all other video submissions for this contest.

How to Enter

We will accept entries from Rag Man Project participants of all ages!

STEP 1:

Find a video camera (doesn’t have to be great quality)

STEP 2:

Get a copy of Ballad of the Rag Man (you can buy it on Amazon here, or ask your local bookstore if they have it!)

STEP 3:

Take your video! Always ask people for their permission before taping them, though! And don’t forget your ENTRY TICKET for the contest – you MUST show your copy of Ballad of the Rag Man somewhere in your video to qualify!

STEP 4:

If you like, you can edit your video together with music and text. Animoto is a great tool to use online, and your computer probably comes with a video editing tool. Otherwise, submit your video raw. If it has a great story, it doesn’t have to have all of the music and stuff!

STEP 5:

Upload your video to YouTube

STEP 6:

Embed your video on your Rag Man video contest submission form. Here’s how:
                    1. Go to your YouTube page.
                    2. In the dropdown menu in the upper right of your page, select “My Videos.”
                    3. Select your Rag Man entry video from your list of videos.
                    4. On the right side of the page, you’ll see “URL” and “Embed.” Copy the text
that appears beside “Embed” and then paste it into the “Embed Your Video” text
box that appears on the submissions page.
                    5. Complete the rest of the submissions form, then hit “Send.”

You’re done! We’ll look through every week’s entries and choose a winner each week!
We will also choose, from time to time, an entry that gets a lot of attention, so get all of your friends to check out your movie!
And HAVE FUN!!

Not only might you win the weekly prize, but you might win the GRAND PRIZE – the winning videos will be chosen after April 1st, 2010. And, if you join the Rag Man Project Ning site, you’ll find tons of other ways to collect Rag Man points and redeem them for great prizes. Become a Rag Man CHAMPION! The Rag Man Project participant with the most points by September 1st, 2010 will win a special prize . . .

Winner Selection

AFTER APRIL 1st, 2010, the Rag Man Project judges will choose the Grand Prize Winners from the videos that have been posted as responses to the Rag Man Project video. The Rag Man Project panel will judge the videos based on their adherence to the rules and regulations, and also based on creativity.
